Ghost Squad was inspired by Dominican folklore that says fireflies are the souls of our lost loved ones watching over and protecting us, as well as my love for all things spooky and adventurous. What was your inspiration behind Ghost Squad? Ghost Squad has the nostalgia of Hocus Pocus, the thrilling adventure of Stranger Things, and every childhood Halloween fantasy come true. This Latinx book will teach you the importance of family, friends, and how the people you have lost are always with you no matter what. Augustine, and my favorite fictional cat, Chunk, who is solely motivated to ghost-hunt if it involves cheese. My giggling was nonstop with the adorable friendship between Lucely and Syd, the quirky ghosts wandering St. This middle-grade read brought me back to being a kid reading Goosebumps under the covers. Augustine, I knew that this was the book that my preteen soul always needed. Ever since I saw the announcement that Claribel Ortega wrote a novel about two best friends, a fluffy cat named Chunk, and a witchy Abuela on a ghostly adventure around St. Stephenson said there are two main things that people get wrong, in his view, when they talk about the metaverse these days. So, what is the open metaverse, and what isn't it? I think people understand the way it works: companies latch on to a word and use it for their purposes in a way that helps them achieve their goals as a business, and and it's left up to we as consumers to kind of look at that and hopefully cast a skeptical eye on it." The company's stated purpose is to help creators build the "open metaverse," the term Stephenson says he uses to differentiate it from the current corporate versions of metaverse.Ĭalling it an "open" metaverse, Stephenson said on the latest episode of Decrypt's gm podcast, "works pretty well. 30 years later, Sotheby's is auctioning off rare items associated with the book, and Stephenson is working on a new layer-1 blockchain company for the metaverse, Lamina1. Neal Stephenson coined the word "metaverse" in his seminal 1992 sci-fi novel Snow Crash. I know for certain that a single tumor in one region of my mom’s body fundamentally changed every part of her life and being. Lorde reminds us that a patient’s experience with disease is not isolated within the region that is afflicted – disease can be all-consuming, changing our minds, our relationships, and the way we see the world. Being a patient of such a disease makes you question your very existence – you question why this happened to you, why your body would allow such a thing to happen, and question how this disease has changed the person you see when you look in the mirror. I think these journal entries also add a lot of dimension to how we consider illness and disease – cancer is not just about tumors, or about cells that have diverged from their normal cycle. These entries give texture to her narrative and contrast her reflections on the past with what she was feeling in the moment of or while coming to terms with illness. Something that I absolutely adored about this piece was Lorde’s choice to recount her narrative largely through a series of journal entries. Though Lorde’s experience with breast cancer is undoubtedly unique, I couldn’t help but reflect on my mother’s experience with breast cancer and find similarities between their narratives. Audre Lorde’s Breast Cancer: A Black Lesbian Feminist Experience was touching and poignant on many levels. The damsel in distress, however, gets seduced by the monster which utterly disgusts him. “Delusion for a Dragon Slayer” features a man who is tasked with slaying a monster as an afterlife test. In the introduction, Ellison tells us this story is pretty much autobiographical, which doesn’t come as a big surprise. In “Lonelyache”, a recently divorced man dreams of murdering people and treats a series of women badly. The ant-like creatures who share a hive mind were interesting, however, the narrator blames a rape victim for being raped and lets us know how horrible he thinks she is. Two men and a woman crash land on a planet in “World of the Myth”. An ugly person named Person is put to death for being ugly. “Eyes of Dust” takes place in a world where ugliness is not tolerated. Big Sam saves a woman from being offered up as a virgin sacrifice and she thanks him by condemning him to death because woman are awful. “Big Sam was My Friend” is about circus performers with psychic powers performing on an alien world. The woman has sex with all the men even though they beat her and ignore her cries. Basically, four men and one woman are being tortured by an artificial intelligence the whole time. “I Have No Mouth & I Must Scream” doesn’t have much of a plot. Harlan Ellison is considered one of science fiction’s grand masters and I’ve heard praise for the title story in this collection, so I decided to give it a try.
